How does weather has an effect on our Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure plays a significant role in heart health, and it requires proper maintenance and timely checkup. People with higher blood pressure struggle much as there are chances of any lifestyle change that could again put their life at risk. The utter dismay of the condition wants a restricted lifestyle with routine checkups and a healthy diet.

Since most of our body’s function is somewhat connected to our heart and brain, it necessitates its take care from time to time. Different seasons affect our system collectively in a distinguished manner; summers might be too hectic and dehydrating; on the other hand, winters might be too cold and harsh on your system, skin, hair, etc.

Moreover, COVID_19 this year posed an excessive risk, especially during these winters, as it was exceptional from the others. Keeping ourselves to our homes somewhat protects us from the dismay of the seasonal changes outside, but as we are exposed to it brings drastic changes that generate several health conditions.

A recent study has claimed that seasonal changes, amongst other things, have also shown a significant influence on blood pressure levels. The study established results after conducting extensive research on more than 40,000 people who accurately demonstrated that season does affect the blood pressure levels in an individual.

The research gave results; blood pressure levels are usually low during summers as compared to wintertime. The results are a newer discovery and added knowledge to better care for ourselves or someone we know with a condition like blood pressure.

The Findings

Several cities were taken in to study the reading of blood pressure levels- whether they dip or rise depending on the cold or hot environment the place contains. The results concluded that in all these cities, winter months showed a relatively higher blood pressure level than summers in the same towns.

This specific research mainly believed that there is no swing in from to old and vice versa to fluctuate the blood pressure levels. Moreover, the change in winter months in blood pressure ratings depended on shorter days, cooped up inside homes, low physical activity levels, and significant weight gain.

But validation of a study depends on what the reviews before it had to say about the same idea. The base theory remained the same that hot temperature in a place would promote lower blood pressure levels, but then moving from one place to another does affect pressure levels as the climate change.

If one moves from a hot climate to a colder one, the blood pressure rises faster, while moving from cold to hot temperature takes time for the blood pressure to fluctuate again. Researchers have not yet been able to figure out the precise reason this happens. But they have brought out a hypothesis that says that the blood vessel diameter shrinks when it comes in contact with cold temperature.

Hence, spending and exposure to colder temperatures will experience this effect over time, leading to a rising blood pressure level. Other hypothetic reasons for this blood pressure fluctuation in cold weather have been given, suggesting that winters are darker as there lacks no production of vitamin D in the body compared to summers because there is no sunlight and most of the time is spent behind closed doors.

Apart from the vitamin D factor, hormones also play the role of maintaining our blood pressure levels. The amount of sunlight one also influences hormonal change is exposed to during the cold season.

What Idea does it give?

It would be quite funny to think that people with high blood pressure living in colder regions should consider moving to a warm place. It is necessary to know that your body adjusts itself to the weather it has been living in for a long time, and your blood pressure levels fluctuate depending on the same.

Even you choose to move to the region; your body would once again adjust and adapt to the area that would also cause a different effect on your pressure levels. A short term effect isn’t the goal, to be precise. Neither should you consider increasing or changing your pressure medication as each treatment has been tailored and formed depending on the pressure type or condition you are suffering from. It automatically fits the weather condition.

The only thing you need to take care of is your diet and fitness level, which would help your blood pressure remain balanced even on cold days of the year.
