Menstruating was and is still not a very pleasant phase to go with for a woman. Things go south for some women who experience heavy bleeding and other symptoms in a package with those days of the month.
Menstruation is sure a big task in hand; with a consistent muscle cramp, irritation, mood swing, and rashes, it becomes difficult to sit straight and concentrate on anything. But there are times when specific symptoms appear out of thin air, and it becomes challenging to understand. Is there an underlying cause to it, or Is it just another one of menstruation symptoms?
A feeling of lightheadedness or dizziness has been complained about by many women while they are menstruating. Still, the question is, Is it a symptom of menstruation, or Is there something one should worry about?
The answer is No! Menstruation does not have any symptoms that involved the feeling of dizziness. Most of the time, there are chances that dizziness or lightheadedness is just a coincidence occurring while one is menstruating. But if it goes from mild to extreme, there are chances things are not right.
Possible Reasons for Dizziness during Menstruation
Let’s look into possible reasons behind dizziness during menstruation and whether they are connected with the period or just a severe condition requiring an expert intervention.
- Anemia could be the probable cause of lightheadedness during menstruation, and that would mean that you are bleeding unusually heavy. The condition is known as menorrhagia and could lead to anemia. There are also chances that an already anemic person suffers from severe blood loss during menstruation, requiring a talk with an expert immediately.
- It is evident in some women that while they suffer from muscle cramps, they avoid eating anything because it would probably worsen their pain. The inability to eat correctly could cause dizziness. The hormone fluctuation while females are menstruating could cause fluid imbalance making it necessary to consider the fluid intake, especially while they feel dizzy during menstruation.
- PMDD could also be a cause of a feeling of dizziness during menstruation. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder is a condition where a female experiences severe symptoms before or even during menstruation. Some of them include panic attacks, extreme mood swings, headaches, excessive menstrual cramps, dizziness, etc.
- There could be other reasons for dizziness that occurs due to migraines, an unhealthy condition of the brain, an issue with the vestibular system, etc.
Diagnosis and Treatment
There is no exact way to diagnose the reason behind dizziness during menstruation. Still, your doctor might ask you to note down the consistency of your dizziness while you menstruate every month. Your physician may ask for getting blood tests done to see if there isn’t any infection or look for iron deficiency or ask for your medical history related to the same.
Treating dizziness would require finding out the reason for lightheadedness. The expert would advise you with:
- Medication for dizziness based on the cause
- Treating PMDD that would automatically reduce the symptoms of it
- Treating anemia and lessening iron deficiency
- Physical exercises to treat the vestibular condition in an individual
- Making changes in the daily routine would involve the intake of plenty of fluids and a proper sleep cycle.
One could try to manage their dizziness by themselves by looking for some care strategies such as:
- Restricting alcohol consumption
- Trying to take a nap often as it could be due to tiredness of the body during menstruation.
- Try to eat meals often with a proper time gap between each meal.
- Drink plenty of water all the time
- Put your head down between your legs, which will lead to the proper flow of blood circulation from the brain to the rest of the body.
All these methods can help you cope with your dizziness. Still, if the proper persists and then if there are symptoms such as loss of consciousness, then it’s best to meet the physician and get yourself diagnosed for the actual condition responsible for dizziness.
