COVID has posed so many risk factors for the health of old adults and young teens who are into habits like vaping. World health organization had previously generated a warning stating that people who are into the extreme habit of smoking are likely to experience more danger from COVID than people who don’t.
Meanwhile, specific researches are conducted to understand that who are the ones to be most vulnerable to COVID infection; obviously, age would be the most significant factor emphasizing the virus spread and effect on people.
The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had previously this year brought out a list which included all those diseases which tend to be chronic illness, and the SARs-COV-2 COVID virus could, even more, trigger these diseases. The chances are that these inhaled substances from cigarettes or even electronic cigarettes could probably be the first reason why COVID should affect you.
Smoking and Vaping have become more like a trend amongst young teens. Even if the Coronavirus is causing young adults to show only mild symptoms related to the virus, vaping on an extreme level tends to make these teens more prone to COVID infection and have serious consequences.
How has vaping proven itself to be risky for Young adults?
This year, in the Journal of Adolescent Health, a study was published, which undertook the US data. The researchers in the study confirmed that young adults from 18 to 25 years are at more risk.
The study highlighted that in every three young adults who smoke, one is more prone to COVID. The researchers inclined that the ratio decreases to one in every six young adults who do not smoke might contract the infection.
We already know that substances released from cigarettes and other tobacco elements could weaken the lungs and lead to various respiratory issues; moreover, it can affect the immune system, influencing the body’s ability to fight any infection. These factors affect an individual first hand with COVID, and they become incapable of fighting the virus.
According to experts, our mind is wired at a young age so that we tend to take more neurological rewards, and the adolescent age makes us even more risk-taking. Young adolescents are healthier and enjoy a good physique even if they are into smoking or vaping, but it doesn’t seem to go until they reach their middle adulthood age.
An article published in Harvard medical publishing stated,
Smoking and Vaping are often social activities, for young adults. Both involve exhaling forcibly, which may propel droplets that carry viral particles further than at-rest breathing.
Generally, teens have the habit of gathering at a place and smoke together. This tradition might betray the social distancing protocol during COVID that involves removing the mask and inhaling substances that can damage the lungs and make the body incapable of fighting the disease. Although, colleges and schools will amend strict no-smoking rules keeping in mind the social distancing protocol and the pandemic situation.
Smoking together in a group means passing on the droplets, which would be forcibly inhaled by other individuals around. It would mean a massive community spread over a risk of lung infection due to excessive smoking.
Young Individuals shouldn’t be too Overconfident.
Since the beginning of the pandemic young adults have shown an overconfident attitude towards their impossibility to be affected by the virus. In an early report during this year, the Center for Disease Control & Prevention reported that one in five people ages 20 to 44 who become infected are hospitalized, and 2% to 4% require treatment in an intensive care unit.
The statistics mentioned above make it evident that young adults must not misunderstand the sensitivity of the situation. The young adults feel that it is easy to quit smoking any time they want, but their confidence disappears at the turn of adulthood. Hence, the parents must help these teens quit smoking and motivate those who want to leave.
The parents must keep in mind that the present circumstances don’t add up well with any prior chronic illness, so it is best to keep one’s immune as healthy as possible and try to obtain measures that keep one protected from the deadly virus.
